In a letter to its members, ACEM (the Association of European Motorcycle Manufacturers) president Hendrik von Kuenheim calls for European trade bodies to “enable ACEM manufacturers to compete abroad on a more equitable basis, and export to other world regions the added value that we are able to create in Europe.”
In the ACEM’s April newsletter, von Kuenheim, managing director of BMW Motorrad, says that EU markets account for “only 5% of global PTW (powered two-wheeler) production.”
He also writes that “the EU needs to swiftly acknowledge the full extent of the crisis in the motorcycle sector, preventing the enduring decline of European markets from translating into deeper changes in the production structure.”
The letter came on the heels of a first quarter that saw an 8.2 percent decrease in registrations in the European PTW market. Registrations of PTW fell by 9.5 percent in 2011, their lowest point in a decade.
