Polaris, KTM recall bikes for handlebar issues

Polaris and KTM have collectively recalled more than 2,000 motorcycles because of handlebar clamp issues.

Polaris is recalling about 840 units of the 2011 Victory Cross Country models manufactured from January to April 2011. The handlebar clamps and/or risers on the bikes may have been machined incorrectly, which could cause the handlebars to slip in the clamps, according to the recall filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Polaris is notifying owners of affected bikes, and dealers will test and replace defective riser/clamp assemblies beginning this month.

KTM is recalling about 1,228 bikes, including 2011 models of the Husaberg FE 570S, Husaberg FS 570, KTM 450 EXC, KTM 530 EXC and the 2010-11 KTM 690 ENDURO R manufactured from November 2009 to Nov. 23, 2010. Due to improper heat treatment, the handlebar clamps can develop cracks, which would allow the handlebar to move from its set position. KTM dealers will replace the defective clamps starting this month.

The concern with both recalls is that loose handlebars could cause a rider to crash. Neither company reported any previous incidents or injuries with the recalls.
