Access-rights groups to fight possible land closure
A federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposal could close about 30,000 acres of the 75,000-acre Clear Creek area in San Benito County, Calif., to off-highway riding.
This move could ultimately close the entire area since there would be no access, according to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA).
The AMA is working to respond to the proposal with a number of other groups. These groups are analyzing the BLM’s Clear Creek Management Area Draft Resource Management Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Statement. The draft plan studied a variety of alternatives for managing the land and the current preferred alternative would allow no off-highway vehicle use. The AMA and other groups will respond to the draft plan by the BLM’s March 5 deadline.
California grant provides train-the-trainer program
Tread Lightly!, through a grant provided by the California State Parks, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division, has announced six, no-cost training courses to be held this year throughout the state.
Since 2003, Tread Lightly!’s train-the-trainer program has provided individuals from Puerto Rico to Alaska with instruction in innovative, practical methods of spreading outdoor ethics to the public.
As a longtime partner of Tread Lightly!, California State Parks is the first state to work with the organization to provide the trainer course on such a large scale.
