Maryland powersports dealer outlines impact of lead law on his business

Maryland dealership owner Richard Riley told a Washington, D.C. rally that the controversial new lead law has had a major impact on his longtime dealership.

“My dealership has seen a 15 percent reduction in business and as a result I’ve been unable to rehire employees I had to lay off after a very hard winter,” said Riley, owner of Fredericktown Yamaha in Fredericktown, Md.

“The MIC (Motorcycle Industry Council) has estimated the ban could lead to an estimated $1 billion in lost economic value every year and this is happening at a time when we cannot afford these economic losses.”

Riley spoke at the rally with one of his grandchildren by his side to not only outline the economic impacts of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, but also its impact on families.

“Consumers are aghast that they can’t get parts for their children’s vehicles,” he said. “This is family fun and they want to continue it.”
