Industry groups request temporary exemption from lead limits
The Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) sent letters to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Monday asking for a temporary exclusion from the lead limits specified in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.
The limits apply to products intended primarily for children ages 12 and younger, which would include a number of vehicles produced and sold by SVIA and MIC members.
The lead limits are set to take effect Feb. 10, and the letters ask the CPSC to grant a petition for temporary exclusion before that time in order to avoid disruption to MIC and SVIA member companies.
“SVIA and MIC applaud Congress for taking an important step in protecting children from those products that truly present a lead risk,” said Paul Vitrano, SVIA’s executive vice president and general counsel, in a written statement. “However, there should be common-sense procedures for exclusions of parts, such as brakes, engines and suspensions, that do not present risk to children in the real world.”
