BMW joins growing list of OEMs looking at electric motorcycles

Another major motorcycle manufacturer has expressed interest in an electric-powered motorcycle.

BMW Motorrad President Hendrik von Kuenheim said in a recent speech at Intermot, the German motorcycle show, his company is looking into building a number of electric-powered models.

“In the coming years we can envision that — apart from the combustion engine — the electric drive could be implemented in a new vehicle concept at an acceptable price combined with an acceptable range,” he said.

Honda and Yamaha also are looking at electric-powered motorcycles.

Honda Motor Corp., and Yamaha Motor Corp., have set launch dates for electric motorcycles, reported the Nikkei Business Daily.

The paper said Yamaha aims to launch electric motorcycles by 2010 with a range of 60 mph. Honda is expected to launch lithium-ion battery electric motorcycles in 2011. Officials at Honda and Yamaha Motor said they are developing electric motorcycles but have yet to decide specifics.
