First-half new unit sales were down, retail report shows

A red-hot scooter market wasn’t quite enough to bolster an overall down first half for the powersports industry.

Data from the Motorcycle Industry Council shows overall retail sales down slightly more than 8 percent for the first half compared to the year-ago period. Both major off-road segments — ATV and off-highway bikes — are down either close to or more than 20 percent. Those numbers, however, do not include new entry OEM sales nor UTV numbers, the latter of which appears again to be increasing this year.

Scooter sales definitely increased. For the first half, sales were up more than 65 percent from the year-ago period to more than 49,000 units. June alone was up close to 90 percent.
