Polaris recalls three snowmobile models
Due to faulty starting ring-gear, Polaris Industries, in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC), voluntarily recalled about 1,360 snowmobiles, according to the CSPC.
The three models include: 2008 550 LX, Trail Touring and Trail Touring Deluxe. The models were sold at Polaris dealers nationwide from May 2007-June 2008 for $5,900- $6,300.
Cracks could form in the starting ring-gear and cause it to fracture into several pieces. The broken pieces could be propelled out of the chassis of the machine at high speed, causing serious injury or death to the rider and/or bystanders. The firm has received 10 reports of loose ring-gear attachment bolts or broken gear teeth. No injuries have been reported.
There is also a limited quantity of suspect parts that were sold to consumers for service work or accessory starter installations. These parts could fit various models of snowmobiles and were sold from March 3-October 22 in 2007.
Consumers should stop using the recalled snowmobile immediately and contact any Polaris Snowmobile dealer to schedule a free repair. Registered consumers have been notified directly.
