Apr. 21, 2008 – JAMA exports continue recent downward trend

Manufacturers in the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) have reported five consecutive months of decreased exports, including those in February.
JAMA members, which include Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, reported shipping 122,085 units abroad in February, an 11.2 percent decrease from the same month of the previous year.
Yamaha and Honda reported sharp decreases in exports. Yamaha shipments were down 23.4 percent to 31,984 units. Exports from Honda were down 36.3 percent to 20,152 units in February.
However, both Suzuki and Kawasaki reported more exports that month. Suzuki exported 49,853 units, up 10.8 percent compared to February 2007. Kawasaki posted a 5.1 percent increase to 20,096 units.
JAMA?exports to the United States in February dropped more than 21 percent compared to the previous year. That follows nearly a 29 percent drop in exports to the United States in January.
For motorcycle production, members collectively posted a 19.5 percent decrease in February compared to the same month of the previous year. That is a 30,828-unit decrease for the month. February was the sixth consecutive month production has decreased.
Yamaha posted the deepest decrease, down 30.3 percent to 30,226 units. Honda cut production 24.6 percent to 33,708 units for the month. Kawasaki was down 16.8 percent to 18,894 units.
Suzuki was the lone manufacturer to have a single-digit decrease, down 6.2 percent to 44,202 units. PSB
