BRP recalls 1,800 Ski-Doos

BRP is voluntarily recalling select Ski-Doo models following explosion incidents in Rigolet, Labrador, according to an April 4 notice from Transport Canada, Canada’s department of transportation.

Recalled models include the 2005 Expedition TUV 600 HO SDI, the 2007 and 2008 Skandic SWT V-800 Yellow and the 2008 Skandic SUV 600HO SDI Black.

Affected machines were sold in the United States and Canada.

Following reports of two explosions, which occurred on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22, Transport Canada opened a defect investigation. The agency, along with BRP, conducted numerous inspections, fuel analyses and other engineering tests.

Transport Canada, in conjunction with BRP, has determined that under extremely cold and dry weather (temperature colder than minus-22 degrees Fahrenheit and less than 50 percent relative humidity), electrostatic charges can accumulate on components within the fuel tank when the engine is left idling. At a certain level of electrostatic buildup, a discharge can suddenly occur, sparking in the vapor space volume of the partially filled fuel tank, causing an explosion.
