Piaggio launches new models, hints at future product

MILAN, ITALY — Piaggio Group SPA unveiled several new products during a press conference Nov. 6 at the EICMA show in Milan, Italy, that Powersports Business attended.

Among the highlights were Piaggio’s X7, the company’s newest models in the medium-size commuter segment; the MP3 HyS, which features a hybrid drive system that combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor (the HyS was presented at EICMA as a prototype, although a production model is expected by the end of 2008); and Motto Guzzi’s Stelvio, which features a newly developed 100hp, 1,200cc eight-valve engine. Other models include Aprilia’s SMV 750 Dorsoduro and RX/SX 125, and Derbi’s Senda DRD Evo.

“This is a very exciting time for Piaggio,” said Roberto Colaninno, CEO of the Piaggio Group, “with some great new models available from Moto Guzzi, Aprilia and Derbi, along with Piaggio’s X7 and the hybrid MP3.”

Colaninno said Piaggio sees greater competition for the entire Italian cycle industry from across the globe, and that the company has plans in the near future to launch a two-wheeled scooter in India. He also hinted at a new product that’s currently in development that “will speak for itself.”
