Illinois hands out more than $250,000 in snowmobile trail grants

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich awarded state public-access snowmobile trail grants of $252,400 to seven local governments and to the statewide snowmobile association for trail maintenance, equipment and safety improvements, according to an Illinois Department of Natural Resources press release.

Blagojevich says the grants are for needed equipment and maintenance to enhance snowmobile safety on the trails.

The Illinois snowmobile grant program is funded entirely through registration fees by snowmobilers, which is $18 per snowmobile for three years. There are more than 40,000 registered snowmobiles in Illinois.

The snowmobile grant program is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
