Harley faces more hurdles in India

India’s Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Heavy Industries have locked horns during the ongoing process to allow Harley-Davidson motorcycles to take to the streets there, India’s Hindustan Times reported Sept. 23.

Sources in the Commerce Ministry told the newspaper that despite being cleared on emission grounds, the American motorcycles are not able to hit the Indian roads due to daunting trade barriers.

The Commerce Ministry’s foreign trade director has sought a clarification from the Heavy Industries Ministry on what the grounds were that the bike maker was not being allowed entry into India since they were cleared on emission levels.

According to government sources, the newspaper said, the foreign trade director is amending its export-import policy to make way for bikes with engine capacities in excess of 500cc, but it remains to be seen if the Heavy Industries Ministry will approve the proposal.
