Canada’s motorcycle and ATV industries have record-breaking 2006 sales

The Canadian powersports industry achieved record-setting sales for motorcycles and ATVs in 2006, according to Canada’s Motorcycle and Moped Industry and Canadian All-Terrain Vehicle Distributors Council.

Total combined sales of motorcycles and ATVs in 2006 were 171,028 units. The last time recorded sales were at an all-time high was in 1985 when the industry’s total combined sales were 169, 874 units.

“This is great news for the industry,” said Bob Ramsay, MMIC president. “Not only are sales up, but the milder than usual weather has allowed riders of ATVs and motorcycles to enjoy a much longer riding season.”

Ramsay attributed some of the growth to a greater number of women involved in riding and the increased popularity of recreational activities accessible through ATVing.

From a provincial perspective on motorcycle sales, Alberta saw an increase of 25.22 percent in sales, while Newfoundland saw an increase of 24.14 percent and Manitoba was next with 13.79 percent. On the off-highway vehicle side, Saskatchewan took the lead with a 25.37 percent increase, followed by Alberta at 20.30 percent and Newfoundland showing an increase in sales of 12.77 percent.
