Chinese enter PWC market – December 25, 2006

What could be the first personal watercraft to come from China appeared at both Intermot in Germany and EICMA in Italy during the past few months.
Zhejiang Shengqi Motion Apparatus Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of small-displacement motorcycles and ATVs, motorized buggies and radio-controlled toys, calls the Jet Motor its most promising new development.
A two-person craft, the 591-pound Jet Motor is powered by a 754cc water-cooled two-stroke producing 88hp at 6,350 rpm for a top speed of 56 mph.
While Shengqi Motion representatives at both Intermot and EICMA had no plans for a formal distribution network in North America, they did say they would be willing to ship orders of four units, eight units or 12 units to anyone interested in obtaining the PWC.
Established in 2001, Shengqi Motion exports 100 percent of its product output. Representatives say the company — a ISO9001-certified manufacturer of product that has earned CE/EEC and EPA approval in Europe and the United States — had sales of $60 million last year.
Shengqi Motion’s manufacturing plant covers an area of 1.51 million square feet and employs 800 workers. Representatives said development of the Jet Motor included testing at a company-owned lake located near the factory.
