Yamaha’s first-half sales, income up 20 percent – August 14, 2006
Increased sales in all business segments along with beneficial exchange rates helped boost Yamaha Motor Co. sales and income during the first six months of the year.
Yamaha net income for its second quarter ended June 30 was 16.2 billion yen ($141.3 million), up 17 percent from net income of 13.8 billion yen in the second quarter of 2005. The company’s second quarter sales were 414 billion yen, up 19 percent from 348.6 billion yen during the same three-month period last year.
For the six months ended June 30, Yamaha net income was 44.3 billion yen, up 20.2 percent from 36.8 billion yen for the same six-month period in 2005. The company had sales of 812.9 billion yen, up 20.1 percent from 676.9 billion yen in the comparable year-ago period.
The company’s overall motorcycle sales in the first six months rose 27.1 percent to 484.6 billion yen and 2.17 million units. Motorcycle sales in North America totaled 113,000 units, down from 114,000 units; sales in Europe accounted for 261,000 units, up from 244,000 units; and sales in Asia outside of Japan numbered 1.54 million units, up from 1.21 million units and reflecting significant growth in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries in the region.
Worldwide marine product sales totaled 148 billion yen, up 11.1 percent from the previous first half-year.
Worldwide power product sales were 104.3 billion yen, up 12.8 percent from the previous first half-year.
In North America, Yamaha’s consolidated sales totaled 231.9 billion yen, up 18.7 percent from the same period in 2005. The company said cycle and ATV sales were down, but PWC and side-by-side vehicle sales increased.
For the year ending Dec. 31, the company raised its net income forecast 17 percent from 65 billion yen to 76 billion yen and its full-year sales forecast by 4.8 percent from 1.45 trillion yen to 1.52 trillion yen.
Preparing for a slowdown in the Indonesian market, the company cut its year-end motorcycle sales forecast from 4.55 million motorcycles to 4.46 million units.
