Buell starts up production of XBRR bikes – June 5, 2006

Buell Motorcycle Company, East Troy, Wis. started production of its XBRR race bikes in early May.
Fifty XBRRs will be built in the production run.
In April, Buell announced production had been delayed as engineers analyzed and refined components following mechanical failures that forced the early retirement of the first four production-run XBRRs from their competition debut at the Daytona 200 in March. The bikes were raced by dealer-sponsored teams.
“Daytona was a real test for the XBRR and the dealer-sponsored teams that entered the race,” Buell said. “We learned a lot and we’re refitting those bikes and developing solutions to the problems we encountered. We won’t begin final production of the XBRR until we’re confident we’ve got these issues sorted out.”
Redesigned parts include new driveline components and a new timing trigger wheel, as well as a switch from a high-contact to a coarse-pitch fifth gear. A larger oil cooler also was developed.
Some of the new components were tested during the American Sport Bike Racing Association 250km Team Challenge endurance race.
“The XBRR was designed to be an affordable, turn-key race bike for privateer racing teams competing at a professional level,” said Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “Reliability is critical, and we’re confident that the improvements we’ve made since Daytona will ensure that.”
