Two states start dealer groups – April 24, 2006

Powersports dealers in Nevada and Oklahoma recently formed state dealer associations.
Led by dealer Ron Bray, a group of about 20 dealers met in Stroud, Okla., on March 20 to revive the Oklahoma Motorcycle Dealers Association. National Council of Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDCA) Chairman Mike Marks and Executive Director Ed Lemco made presentations to the group, of which 15 dealers pledged immediate financial support and committed to recruiting at least one more dealer each.
There are now 15 active state dealer associations associated with the NMDCA.
Nevada dealers met in Reno, Nev. to form the Nevada Powersport Dealers Association (NPDA).
The Nevada association was spearheaded by newly elected Chairman John Glenn of Elko, Nev. Glenn, who has interests in two powersport dealerships in Elko, said he has been frustrated in recent years by the lack of a coalition of dealers to protect the industry.
“It seemed I was waving at windmills,” he said. “Elko is pretty far removed from our state capitol and I’d have to take a number of days away from the shop each legislative session to try to protect my business interests.”
Glenn met with other dealers throughout the state and found they had the same frustrations.
“The more communication we have industry-wide, the better we can focus on our individual businesses. We need to share information about issues we all face,” said Stephanie Nethers, manager of Reno Cycles and Gear and potential member of NPDA.
In addition to Glenn, officers elected are Vice Chairman Robbie Burgess, general manager of Michael’s Cycle Works in Carson City; and Treasurer-Recorder Rich Thorwaldson, general manager of Big Valley Honda in Reno. District directors for Southern Nevada are Paul Langford, general manager of Motorcycle City in Las Vegas and one additional member to be determined. District Director for Northern Nevada is Spencer Barr, sales manager for Cope and McPhetres Marine in Reno.
It is estimated there are nearly 120 powersport dealers in Nevada. In addition to being a clearinghouse and resource for NPDA members, the association will provide legislative advocacy on behalf of the industry and other member benefits.
NPDA has retained Fisher Consulting based in Reno for association management. psb
