Snowmobile Report

AD Boivin, Levis, Quebec, will discontinue using the Rotax 500 Fan engine in its Snow Hawk snowmobile. It will instead use the Rotax 600 H.O. engine, which was introduced in a Snow Hawk model for the 2004 season.
“Rotax stopped making this engine and we had to consider our options,” said Denis Boivin, company president. “We felt that because of customers’ expectations, the 600 H.O. could become the base model and that it would be the only model available next winter.”
A.D. Boivin will accept dealer inquiries for the 2005 models through March for its limited production run.

YELLOWSTONE RULE CHANGE AGAIN
A U.S. district judge in Wyoming issued a temporary restraining order against snowmobile restrictions imposed on Yellowstone National Park in December 2003.
U.S. District Judge Clarence Brimmer concluded that the restrictions would be detrimental to the local economies surrounding the park. His ruling effects the remainder of the 2004 season. It is unclear what will happen for the 2005 season.
The ruling is a response to the re-opening of a 2000 lawsuit by the International Snowmobile Manufacturer’s Association (ISMA), the BlueRibbon Coalition and others, which was put on hold when the Bush administration reversed the Clinton administration phase-out of snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park.
As a result of the ruling, National Park Service has increased the daily entry limits for snowmobiles to 780 for the remainder of this season from less than 500 under the Clinton ban. The new interim rules also require continuation of guided group requirements.
