June 2, 2003 – MDA Ride For Life sets 16-year fund raising record

With the help of motorcycle enthusiasts, Harley-Davidson dealers and area sponsors, the annual Ride for Life raised a record $852,875 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This is the largest amount raised by Ride for Life in its 16-year history. More than 2,700 people participated in the fund-raising ride, held May 3-4 at both East Penn Manufacturing/Deka Battery Company in Lyon Station, Pa., and Dorney Park in Allentown.
Schaeffer’s Harley-Davidson/Buell of Orwigsburg, Pa., received the award for top fund-raising dealership by collecting $139,305. Top fund-raising honors went to Randy Texter of Lancaster, Pa., who turned in $34,508. Ron Kehs also of Orwigsburg, Pa., won the 2003 Special Edition 100th Anniversary Fat Boy customized for Ride for Life. Riders raising at least $5,300 qualified for a chance to be one of 200 riders in the Parade of MDA Heroes at Harley-Davidson’s big 100th birthday bash in Wisconsin this August.
Ride for Life raises more money for MDA than any other Harley-Davidson event in the country. All funds stay in the area, benefiting local families coping with neuromuscular diseases.
MDA is a voluntary health agency committed to finding cures and treatments for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases. Ride for Life funds support local MDA services such as clinic visits, assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces, summer camp for children and support groups for MDA clients and families.
