Follow me to Sturgis
It’s my turn to write a blog for PSB, but my mind is on one thing this week — Sturgis. I recently found out that I’ll be representing PSB at the 75th anniversary of the rally, and I couldn’t be more excited.
This will be my first trip to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Granted, I’ve been to the city of Sturgis before, but it’s quite the sleepy city 51 weeks of the year.
As a kid, I remember my dad, grandpa and uncles coming home from Sturgis every August, and they couldn’t stop chatting about it for a month. There were photos passed around (I never got to see the “adult-only” ones for some reason…) and stories shared (again, some required kids going into the other room). But I always thought an event that makes a group of folks get that amped up every summer must be cool.
Ever since I started my job at PSB, I’ve been waiting for the OK to go to Sturgis. After all, the rally is only about 600 miles from our office. This year, Dave and I chatted about how important the 75th is and how this is the year we finally had to make sure someone from our staff was there. Luckily, I won the game of rock-paper-scissors.
So that first week of August, Group Publisher of Motorcycle Dave Voll and I will head west. We get to hangout with a contingent from Thunder Press, and our plan is to run into old friends and meet some new ones along the way. During the rally, watch the PSB Facebook page, Twitter page and Google+ page for updates from me — I know I’ll be posting like crazy. (Don’t worry, Dave will let me expense my data plan.)
Already on my agenda is at least one stop at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, a journey to the new Harley-Davidson Rally Point and, of course, some long strolls down Lazelle Street. I’m also hoping to pop into Indian Motorcycle Sturgis and Black Hills Harley-Davidson —which I hear has been remodeled — during my trip.
But of course, many of you, our readers and powersports industry veterans, know the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally better than me. I have to know — what are the other places I can’t miss on my trip?
