Erik Buell’s latest project nearly ready to hit the street

EBR’s booth at Dealer Expo wasn’t conspicuous. There was no pomp and circumstance, bright lighting, attention-grabbing music or much else to announce the first-ever public viewing of Erik Buell’s new, consumer-ready sport bike.

Part of that had to do with the fact that EBR (which stands for Erik Buell Racing) barely made it to the show. The company had no brochures to hand out to on-lookers, and its dealer contract was not yet in place. But Buell knew he had to show the industry what he had been up to since he left Harley-Davidson following the shuttering of Buell Motorcycles in November 2009. I talked to him at the show, and the details of that interview will appear in the upcoming issue of Powersports Business.

In that interview, Buell revealed he’s never been a cruiser guy, despite formerly working for the cruiser- and touring-oriented company.

“I’m a sport bike guy, I just am,” he said. “I love all motorcycles, but I would really never own a cruiser.”

He’s hoping there are customers in the United States that love sport bikes just as much as he does, as his limited-edition 1190RS will hit dealerships later this month. Cycle World ran a reader poll this past fall, and 77 percent said they’re most looking forward to whatever Buell is working on, Buell reported. He’ll find out this spring if that interest will translate into sales of his $40,000 sport bike.
